Right to breed and your right to own a pure bred dog:  If there weren’t any quality, caring, responsible breeders you would have no choice but to adopt a shelter dog produced from an accidental mating that didn’t get proper nutrition or proper socialization & stimulation from birth on or a pup produced from parents that were specifically selected for its quality health gene pool.  Accidental matings usually occur from IRRESPONSIBLE dog OWNERS who did not get their dog spayed & neutered and then surrender the litter to the shelter OR it happens in the streets with dogs who have no home (again because of irresponsible “pet” owners who do not get their pets spayed or neutered).

When this is your only option in owning a dog, you may have to opt for a dog that may have a behavior problem due to mistreatment or neglect or living in the streets.  A dog that probably has health problems or will develop them due to things mentioned above.  Please note, those willing to take in these dogs….I SALUTE YOU & from the bottom of my heart thank you!  All animal lovers are very appreciative to those that can provide for the needs of those dogs!  BUT, those that prefer a pure bred, healthy, well rounded balanced dog, DO YOU THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE THAT RIGHT TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU?  Think about it!  If PETA had their way, there would be no breeding allowed of any kind.  ALL animals would be spayed or neutered.  Eventually we would even run out of homeless dogs to adopt and Man’s Best Friend would become instinct.  Can you imagine!  That’s a very sad world that I hope I never have to live in.  The same is true for cat’s and any other animals you may currently own as a pet!

Educate yourself on what is a true puppy mil, WHAT is a back yard breeder, WHAT is a hobby breeder, a commercial breeder, a show breeder, etc etc.  Do the conditions matter or is it only and simply a numbers game?  Or is it simply the word “breeder” that’s bad??  Make up your own mind, don’t let society or main stream media influence your decision.  You have a brain, use it!!  You have rights, implement them! http://americanshihtzuclub.org/adoa

Article below taken from: http://herdsnothoards.weebly.com/1/post/2014/01/you-dont-adopt-rescue-animals.html

Depending on the rescue’s “adoption” contract, you are usually buying or renting them.

Cue the torches and pitchforks!  Better get the lynch mob ready, because I’m about to say stuff that’s against those wonderful souls who rescue animals!!

Now, people are always complaining that people use animals, that breeders are awful because they sell animals.  But how is that any different than a shelter?  When people talk about a breeder’s profit, it is (price listed)x(number of animals)=profit.  They don’t take into account the cost of caring for these animals, nor equipment needed, nor anything else.  And yet, should anyone bring up that shelters also ask high prices for their animals, these same people are quick to bring up that the shelters spend their money on the animals. Not one breeder that I know survives solely on the money made breeding animals.  They have jobs, or spouses, the lucky ones have trust funds or huge bank accounts.  Alternate forms of income, to cover the loss that their breeding hobby is no doubt incurring.  They do not rely on public funds, on fundraising or donations – they rely on their own hard work, both in and out of their breeding hobby.  In a good year, a breeder often finds themselves able to use a black pen when it comes to year’s end, but most of the time, a breeder’s ledgers bleed red ink.  Breeding operations are HUGE money pits, and the average public doesn’t realize this.I do understand that shelters and rescues do a lot of good work.  I understand that the majority are out there because they love animals, and want to help them.  I am not in any way trying to vilify them, nor detract from the work that they do.  I just wish that they’d call a spade a spade, and admit to selling or renting animals.

Adoption brings to mind all sorts of feel-goods.  Giving a family to an abused and neglected animal, a second chance at life for that animal, showing it what a family’s love is all about… And I understand that.  But adopting an animal does not make you a better person, it makes you a person who bought a shelter animal.  By adopting an animal, you are not rescuing an animal, you are buying an animal that someone else may or may not have rescued.

That’s something else to touch on.  Where, exactly, do all these animals come from?  I can hear the RARA’s shouts of “evil disgusting breeders like you!!!” already, so no need to comment that.  The way shelters and rescues want you to think, all the animals in their care are neglected, emaciated, abused and on death’s door when they arrive.  They want you to believe that all of their animals were liberated from test labs, factory farms, puppy mills, breeders and hoarders… But they aren’t.  A good portion of animals in shelters are strays or owner surrenders.  The reasons they are surrendered varies from animal to animal, but until they were dropped off, these animals were well cared for, and well loved.  I know, I know, “not loved enough for the owner to keep them!!!”, but let’s not pass judgement.  Knowing nothing about situations, they could be dropped off because the owner died and the family didn’t want the animal, because the owner became ill, or unemployed and could no longer care for the animal, because the owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t take the animal with them, because the animal was being tormented by their children, for 100 other innocent or not so innocent reasons.  Regardless of why, these animals are dropped off.  Not all of them are rescued, in fact, the majority aren’t rescued, they are simply provided a place to stay while a suitable home is found.

People are quick to defend the cost of a shelter animal, because the shelters “do all that work for them”, however how many of the owner surrenders are spayed/neutered before they come?  How many are up to date on shots and turned in with their vet records?  I personally don’t know the answer to that question, but it would be interesting to find out.  In any event, not every animal turned in at the shelter requires months of care to rehabilitate it.  Many animals(at least at my local shelter) are transfers from another shelter – and that’s a whole nother kettle of fish we’ll get into another day.  It makes me wonder, then, how much shelters would charge if they were only charging what they’d spent on the animal.

“But herds,” the RARA’s whine, “some animals cost thousands to fix up!  They’re charging a flat adoption fee to try and even out the difference!”

Alright, that’s true…  But don’t those high cost cases usually end up with additional fundraising efforts because of it?  Don’t lie, you’ve seen it on Facebook – “JoJo was abandoned by his owners and then hit by a car!  His pelvis was shattered and he needs a lifesaving operation, and we need to raise $5000 to fund it!!  Please donate, and share, so we can get JoJo the surgery he needs!!!”.  And the rescue isn’t going to shut down donations as soon as they get the money they need for JoJo’s surgery.  They’re going to let all the money keep pouring in.  They might not even admit to getting enough for JoJo’s surgery, making JoJo a poster child for the rescue’s fundraising efforts(another topic that will need to be touched on later).

Let’s examine JoJo’s case a little closer.  JoJo was, indeed, abandoned by his owners – JoJo escaped his yard, and his owners didn’t bother looking for him because JoJo was becoming more work than he was worth.  JoJo gets struck by a car, brought into a rescue, and needs an operation for his pelvis.  The rescue takes photos of poor, mangled JoJo, plasters them all over the internet, and the donations start coming in.  In the end, enough money is made to get JoJo his operation, to pay for JoJo’s meds and food for his recovery, and to cover the vaccinations that JoJo may or may not need(but the rescue does them anyway, because it’s easier than doing a titer.)  Since the rescue JoJo was taken to is all volunteers, there’s no need to pay any employees, so that doesn’t add to JoJo’s debt to the rescue.  He was neutered when he came in, and fairly well trained, so no additional cost for those.  JoJo goes through his recovery, with no complications, and the rescue has actually made more money in donations than it cost to care for JoJo, including vet care, feeding and even cleaning supplies.  So why, if JoJo has no outstanding debt to the rescue, is he still being sold for $400 on their website?

GASP!!!  I used that dirty, naughty, 4 letter word again – Sold.  That’s right, JoJo is being sold by the rescue.  He is not being adopted, nor rehomed, nor placed.  He is being sold.  Or possibly rented, depending on the paperwork that particular rescue is using.

I can hear the cussing now – she did it, she really just said that rescue animals are sold!!  That dirty, good for nothing little so and so!!!

Well, it’s true.  I hate the word adoption.  I really really do.  Those words, to me, are an excuse for RARAs to start patting themselves on the back and start gathering in the feel goods.  If it’s someone particularly irritating, I even have to bite my tongue to keep from correcting them.

You see, when you pay money for something, you are buying it, regardless where it came from.  I’ve even recently been informed that in some places you don’t HAVE to pay money for something for it to be a sale – if you give someone cocaine, you’re selling them drugs, regardless if money changes hands.  It’s the same for animals – you might be giving away your dog, but the final transaction is called a sale.  JoJo is being sold by the rescue.  They need to own that fact and understand that they are sellers of animals.  Maybe those animals were unwanted, or abused or neglected before they got them, but the end result is still a sale.

This is my very firm belief.  A sale is a sale – money changed hands for goods(in this case, JoJo), that makes it a sales transaction, by the very definition of the word.  You can pretty it up, and call it an adoption, but it isn’t, not in the least.  Animals, you see, are possessions, by law, as much as the RARA’s hate to admit it.  That’s why people are charged with theft if they take someone else’s animal, rather than “puppy napping”.  That’s why we own animals, because they are possessions.  That’s why you buy animals.

And then renting.  Have you read some of the “adoption applications” that are out there?  Oh my word, they are a little on the extreme side.  I used to follow the horse world fairly readily(not because I had horses, or even rode horses, but because I love looking at horses, and knew a lot of horse people), and some of those applications for a horse from a rescue?  EXTREME.  You weren’t actually going to own the horse, you see, it says right in your contract that the horse is still owned by GlitterFarts Horse Rescue.  You could have the horse seized at any time if you bred it(only applicable for mares, most rescues would geld before releasing, and rightly so), or if you moved, or if you boarded the horse somewhere, or if you were a day late on vaccinations, or if you didn’t feed it what they required you to feed it, or, or, or… Just like that.  And all the time and money you put into that horse?  Gone.  You see that a lot with other animals – if you don’t want the animal anymore, it HAS to go back to the rescue.  If you move, it HAS to go back to the rescue.  The rescue still, technically, owns the animal because of the paper you signed, you’ve just paid them a non-refundable fee for nothing more than the ability to borrow said animal.

They say they do this in the interest of the animal, but I feel it’s more a case of the rescue not wanting to let go of the leash.  They want to still have some control over that animal, and if you’re not doing things EXACTLY as they want you to?  They take it away.  They have the right because you signed that paper.

“But they’re just PROTECTING that animal,” says the RARA, “they just want what’s best for it!!”

Except some of those contracts are so extreme that you have to have the rescue’s permission to get the animal anything but the standard medical care.  Some of them require that you don’t put the animal down until the rescue has been consulted, or require you to use a specific vet.  I don’t feel that putting restrictions on the owner is in the animal’s best interest.  I don’t think that after 6 months, a year, two years, a person should have to give up their animal because they are moving to a different town, or moving from a house to an apartment, however some of these “adoption agreements” state that that’s how it should be.

Now, I’ve said it a million times if I’ve said it once – I am not against ethical, responsible rescues.  I AM, however, against rescues that require you to sign away your rights as an animal owner to obtain an animal through them.  I thoroughly encourage everyone considering an animal to see what the shelter has available, especially when it comes to cats.  I also thoroughly encourage everyone to read the adoption contract before even going to the shelter, and deciding if that rescue’s terms are terms they can live with.

And I really wish rescues would stop calling their transactions adoptions – call them sales or rentals, because that’s what they actually are.

Next Article:
People are often quick to blame “breeders” …..ALL breeders…not just “some” breeders for the numbers of homeless dogs but maybe we are taking the wrong prospective on the subject.  We seem to be painted this picture by the media that nearly all shelter dogs are products of confiscated dogs in horrid conditions by “breeders” and while this does have some truth to it obviously, it is not the entire picture.  Sadly this has led to a general belief in the public that all breeders are bad….you are automatically a puppymill if you breed.  Your dogs live in cages, are nasty and never given love.  You are guilty until proven innocent.  And I find that the word puppy mill is thrown around too loosely.
Did you know that 70% of the dogs that fill shelters are MIXED breeds?  What is the percentage of dogs in shelters that came from a pet owner who did not spay their dog and had an accidental litter only to surrender the entire litter?  The same applies for cats!  (I assure you, ALOT more than you realize)  What percentage were rescued from the streets, confiscated from breeders, puppymills and or hoarders?  It is an assumption in the general public that nearly ALL shelter animals stem from breeders but before you decide your opinion or place blame, do you homework and spread your opinion based on facts.
NAIA online:  “New 501(c) charities devoted to rescuing dogs from distant lands are popping up in states across the US. They are not being formed to place only Puerto Rican dogs, but also to save dogs from as far away as Taiwan 6 and other Asian countries. Several shelters and rescue groups in the Northwest knowingly accept dogs from Taiwan, Puerto Rico or Mexico.”

“There is another disturbing pattern developing, a trend toward importing progressively younger dogs. Two years ago when NAIA first began researching the issue, the foreign imports depicted on shelter web sites were of varied ages. Today, most of them are puppies. It is easy to speculate that if no one is capturing and altering the illusive strays that produce these orphans, then enterprising rescuers and shelter directors could help developing countries become breeding grounds for stocking US shelters.”

“Long-term flooding of US cities with foreign dogs has unavoidable implications for pet population dynamics in the US. The practice of importing dogs from developing countries not only prevents us from making further progress against ‘pet overpopulation,’ in time it could also diminish the responsible breeding and placement of well-bred, healthy dogs and cats. Many conscientious dog breeders are so concerned about ‘pet overpopulation’ they have already accepted the idea that a good breeder is one who seldom breeds. The problem with this conclusion is that it does not recognize the basic marketplace reality that demand drives supply. When responsible breeders quit breeding, it means only that in the future someone else will supply the public with the dogs or cats they want. In this specific case, it also means that the public will have fewer reliable sources for healthy, well bred and socialized purebred dogs”

HEALTH NEWS

As some of you know I speak alot about diet and the option of raw diet.   I feel compelled to mention this because I hear these statements ALL of the time.  People often say to me “but most vets do not recommend a raw diet” OR “my vet said never to feed my dog “PEOPLE” food.  hmmmm I find this so extremely interesting.  I am actually almost speechless that vets say these things and even more so that most people don’t even realize what they just said….they just go with it because the words came out of a “vets” mouth.

So here is my first question …….what exactly is dog FOOD?  And what is it exactly that categorizes people food as PEOPLE food?   Most commercial dog food ingredient lists contain things such as chicken, duck, beef, lamb, rice, apples, carrots, potatoes, peas, kale, oats etc etc.  I don’t know about you but I eat all of those things!

So here are my thoughts that I think everyone should at least ponder this.  If you are feeding a quality dog food, what do you hope are the ingredients in that food?  Dog food should be made out of ???……road kill??  Horse food??  Seriously…..if you want them to eat things like chicken, lamb, potato, carrot etc etc what are those things if they are not ALSO “people” food right?

I think a much more appropriate term that would be better understood by the masses would be to say “don’t feed your dog table scraps”.  There is a difference in people food vs table scraps.  Left overs from dinner could be salty, high fat, spicy etc etc.  Therefor being more selective in what you feed your dog is the wiser.  But opting to feed your dog “people food” straight out of your own kitchen is not only smart but the healthiest choice.  No preservatives, no hidden ingredients, a truly human grade quality diet.    This includes fruits and veggies as “healthy” snacks as oppose to store bought processed snacks.  I recommend nothing from a can, all fresh produce.  No processed meats, all fresh meats!

Now, as far as the “vet” is concerned, I am not saying to over look your vets advise but do keep this in mind, your vet is a “medical” doctor NOT a nutritionist.  Unless they specialize in nutrition, they are not automatically educated in this area simply because they are a doctor.  They are educated in the field of medicine.  For some, there are also added benefits in recommending the commercial foods they carry in their clinic and no money is made by recommending you make your own dog food.  Even when commercial dog foods have ingredients such as beef, chicken or lamb, how do we know these meats were human grade or left over parts or even animals that were not deemed consumable by humans such as sickly animals therefor they were discarded over to the “dog food companies” and don’t be naive and think this doesn’t happen.

The information on the internet is endless.  Many have said to have cleared many many health issues simply by taking their dog off of commercial diets.  Issues like bladder stones, skin issues, allergies, arthritis, even improvements with diabetics!

Here are a few links but do your own research……………….

I will be adding more to this section soon!

  • DOG FOODWe were feeding Nature’s Variety Instinct dry for a while & sending puppies to their new homes with this food but I would like to recommend a change for those using this food.  While I feel it is a quality food, I also feel (as other breeders of miniature schnauzers agree) that this food is too high in protein and fat for this particular breed.  I recommend staying around 24-30% protein and no more than 15% fat but preferably lower in fat (10-12) with your dry Kibble.  But I do have some clients who have had good results with this food.  And the Nature’s Variety Instinct Healthy Weight Raw Boost is a good option in this brand because the fat percentage is much lower than their other foods even if your miniature schnauzer is not over weight.  The importance of watching percentage of fat is not about weight of your dog but the pancreas issues this breed can have on a high fat diet!  On a different note, I also use Nature’s Variety RAW Is completely different, even thought it’s raw.  The ingredients include a variety of fresh RAW organic fruits and vegetables and meat source.   Nature’s Variety raw can be used to help a dog gain or lose weight and can be helpful to dogs that need a low fat diet due to pancreas issues.  I have safely used this for a dog with a very sensitive pancreas.  I was very pleased to find a better option for her than RX diet.  But of course every dog is different so this is not considered medical advise.  It is only to tell you of my personal experience.  The main brand of dog food I use is ADDICTION.  I prefer any of their foods that are again, lower in FAT %.  My adults are fed the lamb, my puppies the Salmon puppy.  Addiction makes a variety of type foods such as dry, can and dehydrated from a variety of meat sources and a variety of price ranges.  Also made by the same company, Wishbone Dog food, I use this food regularly as well.

  • Some of the other brands we like are Acana.  They make their OWN food in their own facility!  Huge plus.  I also like Nature’s Logic, especially the sardine formula which is still a high quality protein count without the high fat.  A hard combination to find for this breed in the grain free.  I also like The Honest Kitchen, this food has low fat options that do not sacrifice protein or taste.

  • For those needing a lower fat food for overweight or dogs with sensitive pancreas I have also successfully used Canine Caviar Special Needs, Annemaet Grain Free Lean Formula and Artemis weight management.  Click names of food to visit their websites.  Low fat food is usually sacrificing in protein or total lack of ingredients.  It tends to be bland and not of interest to most dogs however, I have found these foods to do the trick keeping the fat percentage in check, still appealing in taste and ingredient list and no licking and gnawing feet due to carb fillers.  Please share your experiences!

WELLNESS PET FOOD & our experience;  As many of you know, we feed this food to our dogs for about 2 years.  And with great success, however, after the ingredient list was changed by the (new) company, we slowly started experiencing problems.  Everyone started licking their paws, some were gnawing terribly at their paws.  And we were having sudden yeast infections in the ears…….of pretty much everyone.  What are the odds multiple dogs would have a yeast infection in their ears at the same time!  I knew this just did not make sense but I also knew it HAD to be in the food.  So after much research I decided to give Nature’s Logic a try & also found Honest Kitchen.  I am using both brands depending on the specific dogs needs being I obviously have more than one dog but for those with only one or two dogs, choose one or the other.

What happens is dog foods that are high in starch creates an over abundance of yeast in the body.  Such things as potatoes, peas and some other veggies are used as fiber.  They are less expensive than meat proteins, they are also used as fillers as well.  Granted they are nutritional fillers, too much of a good thing is rarely good.  My goal was to find a food low in carbs/starches, still retaining high protein yet not too high in fat content.  BIG challenge with dry kibble which is why I promote feeding raw!  We have only been using Nature’s Logic for a short time but already there are visible results.  Some dogs are no longer licking at all, others very little.  Everyone’s ears are clear except ONE so great progress!  Not only have I ran across this problem, but I have already had two individuals experience the same issues as me as well as a natural pet products retailer told me they were hearing the same things about wellness.

RAW food recommendation.  We feed Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw. I can’t stress the quality of this raw food enough!  The dogs think it is heaven in a bowl~  Can be used for all ages, under weight and over weight dogs, active to less active!

Energy for health, healing & well-being for you and your pet!

Rather than making this a LONG page of reading, I am going to share various links of interest related to pet health.  Today people are becoming more and more aware of things they can do to avoid common pet health issues.  Mostly it starts with diet!!!  I cannot STRESS that enough!  And note or might I even say “Newsflash”, your vet is NOT a nutritionist so do your own homework!  The internet is so vast today that unlimited resources are literally a click away.  Not everyone will agree with every resource I put on this page but I will try to continually add a variety.  I know what its like to search and search for certain info.  One of the things I had in mind for this website is a resource for us to share with one another.  Don’t hesitate to share in a post any information you may think will be helpful to others.

DID YOU KNOW;

Apple Cider vinegar has MANY benefits!  Apple cider vinegar has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties. Among the ailments it’s said to cure are allergies, acne, high cholesterol, joint pain, weight loss, rheumatism, arthritis, gout, dandruff, chronic fatique, candida, sore throat, gum infection, sinus infection, flu, acid reflux, leg cramps, athletes feet and ear infections. It’s also used to help dissolve kidney stones, lower high blood pressure, and it’s also been shown to help with type 2 diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity.

In addition to the things listed above, did you know ACV can also clear yeasty doggie ears, ear infection (human or canine), ear mites (of course dilute).  Regular white vinegar can also be used for some of the external uses, also dilute.

** Did you know drinking 2 T of ACV in a glass of water 1-2 times a day can clear a bladder infection in only a day or two?  I have proven this more than once!

** Vinegar can also be put in a cool bath to relieve and heal a sunburn.

** Soak your feet in vinegar water to relieve athletes feet

Is your dog constantly scratching???  Is your dog often scratching their muzzle, ears, licking and or gnawing at their feet?  Are they developing red dis-colorization on the feet, mouth and tear stains?  Were you told by your vet it was a FLEA ALLERGY even though you never see any fleas on your dog.  You were probably told “It only takes ONE flea.”   Are you interested and or open to try a new approach to solving this problem and probably getting your dog off of medication FOREVER!  There is a little secret your vet didn’t tell you.  Maybe your vet didn’t even know.  After all, they are a MEDICAL doctor and most medical doctors are not specialized in the area of nutrition or holistic (aka natural) alternatives.  Medicine is their field and quit frankly the only way they make any money is to prescribe medicine.  Don’t get me wrong, I am not against doctors or medication.  In many ways they are a blessing and a life savor however, there are times that medication is only a band-aid to the problem.  Sometimes the only way to solve the problem is to go straight to the source rather than to treat the symptoms right?  Let me suggest the concept that it might actually be your dog’s diet and not pesty fleas creating this problem.  See, much of the commercial dog food today is full of carbs for the purpose of low cost.  Many carbs are actually very healthy but in moderation.  They provide fiber, proteins, vitamins and minerals however, due to the low cost, many dog foods are over abundant in carbs such as rice, potato, potato starch, peas, pea starch, carrots, etc etc.  In the body carbs turn to sugar which in turn feeds yeast in the body creating an over abundance of yeast.  This is why some dogs who have the “scratching problem” may also have reoccurring yeasty ear infections!  Imagine that!  Suggestion, try switching to a lower carb dog food.  If you have a sever case you might need to put your dog on a bland diet for a week or two to combat this build up of yeast in their system.  If you just can’t find a food that does the trick for your dog,  try making your dog’s food.  Leave out or greatly minimize things such as rice and potatoes.  You might just be surprised at the huge difference in your dog.   Making your own food can be as easy as a little time in the kitchen once a week or even once a month.  Just bag up their meals and freeze them.   You can bag each meal or one or two days worth of feedings in one package.  Thaw enough for two day supply at a time.  There are tons of suggestions on the internet for making your own dog food.  Tweak as needed for your dog’s needs.

FOOD NEWS: For this breed we recommend staying around 22-26% protein and 10-15% fat (depending on the individual dog.  The first ingredient should be a meat and even better if the food has more than one type of meat/protein source.  You want to see a nice variety of veggies as well as Omega 3 & 6.  No corn, wheat or artificial flavors or preservatives.  You do not want to see loads of potatoes & peas as too much of this combined with other ingredients is an abundance of carbs which are used as a filler.  When you see potato & potato fiber or peas & pea fiber, that’s too much.  Sweet potato is better than regular potato.

LOW FAT for the over weight or sensitive pancreas dog:  I have also discovered a couple of lower fat foods for those dogs needing less fat due to pancreas issues.  I am trying one of these now.  The second has been hard to find in stock, it seems to sell out fast with many good reviews on several websites!   It is very hard to find a very low fat that you do not sacrifice too much protein and OR quality ingredients.  And usually these “low fat” foods are so bland, the dog’s just turn their nose up & go hungry. I am not recommending them based on my usage, only their potential.  I will post the names soon but if you want to know more, just email me.

This site is a MUST SEE:   http://www.theonlinevet.com/innercircle.php        I would like to add that holistic options ARE true choices!  Don’t think that they don’t work!  I have personally cleared a dog of a cancerous tumor through 100% holistic methods in just 4 short months!  He was 10 years old when starting the treatment.  He died at almost 12 years old and NOT of cancer but of a failing heart.  And let me tell you, right up until the last couple of weeks of his life he was amazing at keeping up with the younger dogs.  You would have never guessed his age by his activity level and alertness!   He never lost vision or hearing or any mobility.  We also kept him on daily NuVet and incorporated raw foods in his diet.  He was our foster dog that we took in when he was 9 1/2 years old and after the cancer, we decided to let him live out his life here with us.  And yes, one of the products we used was the Energy Cup mentioned below.  He was a VERY special boy which my entire family was just so touched by.  We was very loved & we will NEVER forget him.             Here he is …….(He is 10 years old in this picture!!)

***********CHECK THIS OUT!:  Also a GREAT recommendation of products can be found at http://www.vitalityscience.com/.  For those of you who are interested in natural healthy products & supplements or that are having an unresolved issue this site is a must see.  So many times we rely on our vet and so many times they just can’t fix the problem.  What many don’t realize is this is happening because “medication” is not getting to the root of the problem and many times is only a band-aide.  Nutrition is simply the key in a huge number is issues.  Medical doctors are not in the field of nutrition nor are they trained on the subject.  They are in fact trained in medicine.

I recently ran across this site and thought it had some helpful information some of you may enjoy;

– – – Nature’s Logic – – – Natural Balance- – – – – Prarie – – – Instinct RAW ……….Innova……..Blue Buffalo…………OR any other “A” Grade Food!  See our “grade your dog food chart” on the Raw or Commercial “POST page, links to the right

Ideally you want a low fat % without sacrificing your protein.  This breed seems to be best suited at 12-15% fat.  Some dogs may be suited for a higher percentage and some may require less.  This is just a general idea for you to gauge by when selected a food for a miniature schnauzer.  Most dogs that have had any pancreatic issues will need under 10% fat content.  A raw diet is great for dogs needing a lower fat.  Of course if you are not purchasing “already packaged” raw with labels and are making your own, that means taking off the fat if using chicken or turkey and NOT using red meats with fat content.  Venison (if you are fortunate to have access to it even just once a year) is a very very low fat red meat.

Anyone that makes their own food for their dog, PLEASE SHARE YOUR RECEIPTS.  So many people are interested in supplementing their dog with natural foods and are happy to get some ideas so you veterans out there share your experiences.

We use Instinct Raw and for our dry kibble we use Nature’s Logic.  Nature’s Logic is not carried by the large chain pet stores so you may want to visit their website for retailers in your area.  CLICK HERE to visit Nature’s Logic website.  I order mine through www.wag.com  My nearest retailer is about an hour drive plus ordering (even with shipping) I save $10-$15 per bag for the large bags compared to my local retailer.  Wag.com offers free shipping on orders of $35 or more AND first order gets a 15% discount!  My orders also arrive fast!  Almost always in 2 days.  Can’t beat that!  And now that we no longer use Wellness, ALL the gnawing & licking of the paws has stopped & yeast ears are now clear with Nature’s Logic!

What vets don’t tell you……….if your dog has chronic yeasty ear infections…….. CHANGE YOUR FOOD & you’ll never have to medicate again!  Another little hint to clear ear infections with changing their food is try diluting vinegar (white or apple cider)  and cleaning their ears out.  You can dilute with water or pet ear cleaner at a 50/50 ratio…..DO NOT use straight vinegar!!  Use a generous amount, let sit for about 1 minute, then let dog shake head to loosen debris and clean out.  Wait a couple of days and repeat.  Usually works with one or two cleanings.  Use this method once a month for maintenance.  You can add a small amount of alcohol but it’s not vital that you do.  If you are trying to stop the paw licking, try adding a probiotic to their food.  This is in addition to changing foods of course. There are a variety of probiotics.  We often use Acidophilus.  This helps build the “good” bacteria in the intestines and to fight the over abundance of bad bacteria and or yeast build up.  NOTE:  Licking and gnawing of the paws is a YEAST build up in the body which is caused by foods that are too high in starchy ingredients.  Starch turns to sugar and feeds yeast.  To really see the results, you need to get to the root of the problem by changing the diet.

Pet Loss

I personally know the pain of losing a cherished pet and I know many of you out there have experienced the same.   Grief is grief whether its the loss of a close family member or close friend.  For ALL animal lovers,  our pets are our very close friends.

Here is a recommended website (book) that some of you might find helpful with the pain of loosing someone you love:  http://closerthanyouthinkthebook.com/blog/2011/01/did-you-know-that-animals-are-spiritual-messengers-too/

I would like to create this post for those that are searching for answers or just searching for a compassionate friend to lend an ear.  Until I put all the pieces together, this page will be a work in progress but to start things off I would like to introduce you to a new friend of ours Annette at http://www.pawprintsfromheaven.org
This site gives you a place to interact with others and tell your story as well as a list of books on the subject of grieving after the loss of a beloved pet family member.  They offer FREE Pet Memorial offering a place for your pet’s story to live on and a place to find peace and healing.

Maybe we can make this a page all about the JOY’s of pet ownership telling all the wonderful experiences we had with our beloved pet instead of a page about grief but either way, we want you to feel welcome to comment or ask questions and most importantly TALK!  If you are grieving, I want you to know that you are not alone!  There are many that would love to lend an ear or even a shoulder to you……….feel free to post any questions or comments you have in this post.  Your thoughts are welcome.

I would also like to introduce you to a quick video about animal communication;  Youtube Video

A wonderful book by Agnes Thomas called “Pet’s Tell The Truth” wonderful read about animal communication

Scissor & Blade Sharpening!

Do you groom your own dog but can’t find anyone to sharpen your scissors and clipper blades?

With owing multiple dogs and grooming a few for other people as well,  I do alot of grooming.  Especially with showing it is so important to have a sharp pair of scissors.

My husband is a professional sharpener! He can come to you or you can bring your tools him or even mail your items!

Alot of people do not realize their clipper blades can be sharpened and are constantly buying new blades but Carlos can sharpen them as good as new for a fraction of the cost of a new blades.

He also provides clipper repair.  Very fair, resonable and fast

We LOVE Sarita and her Classic Schnauzers! After losing our sweet miniature schnauzer, Harley, in May to a rare heart disease, we began our search to find a new mini to fill the void of our loss. We found Classic Schnauzers and the owner, Sarita, on her wonderful website. She was so informative and thorough. We knew immediately that she was passionate about her dogs/pups. The time she spent visiting with us on the phone and via email was exceptional. We are now the proud parents of Bozley, and we absolutely LOVE him to pieces. He is a real sweetie pie and has a great disposition. Did we mention that he is so darn cute too!  He has definitely filled the void in our hearts. We are forever grateful for having found Sarita and her Classic Schnauzers and hope to be adding another baby Schnauzer to our family very soon. Thank you, Sarita for bringing such joy to our family.

Sincerely, The Ewing Family Colorado

Hi Sarita, I hope this finds you doing well. Just writing to give you an update on Sophie. She is doing great and we love her. You may remember that I am a K9 handler for our Sheriff’s office. We bought Sophie for my wife , Emily. Well, I have never been a small dog person, but I have to admit, I adore this precious little girl and so does Emily and everyone else that meets her! She is a bundle of energy but also so sweet and loving. We love her dearly and are very thankful to you for giving us the opportunity to love her. Here are some pictures I took today. She is in need of a haircut but still pretty. We have not been able to find anyone who can do a proper schnauzer cut and we have tried several different groomers. Emily wants to learn how to do it herself. We hope maybe one day we visit the Dallas area and you could give her a tutorial. Thank you so much for our precious little girl. We may contact you next year for another one!
Hello.

I just wanted to compliment you on your wonderful website.
It is most thorough and informative one I’ve come across
and I am always reading about mini nauzers for more information
and looking at their photos

You provide so much wonderful information, suggestions, insights
and links for potential miniature schnauzer owners. It’s a great site.

They are of course pure heart stealers.
I have shared my life with 5 mini schnauzers.
My husband Jeff and I are currently the parents of Oliver Dru Davis
aka Ollie.

Ollie is 14.5 and a total love bug. Sweetest little fella on the planet
tho I know there are other sweeties out there.

We found Ollie through Janet Corpin’s Sandcastle Schnauzers in
Palos Verdes, CA.
He and his brother Wallace Duff Davis aka Duff have been our greatest joy.

Duff received his wings a year and a half ago.
He was born with an atrial heart defect that did not mend.
We were told not to expect him to make two years of age.
He made it to 13 and very well too until his wee lion heart gave out.
We all miss him very much.

Ollie has been diagnosed with spondylosis.
We are keeping up with the latest aides and meds for him.
He is a super boy.

I read websites to learn more and laugh at shared schnauzer stories.
Flickr has some of the best photos ever.

Anyhow…I just wanted to say your site is super and
your pups are clearly loved and cared for and you are clearly a great
schnauzer Mom and breeder.
It’s a pleasure to know of Classic Schnauzers.
Sincerely,
B.D. Davis

******Just some pics post grooming!!!!! He is the best dog in the world . We absolutely adore him and cannot thank you enough!!!  Beth and family

******Dude is doing great.  He has gained almost a pound since we’ve had him.  He is happy and a good puppy… most of the time – Ha!  Here are some pics.  The last
ones of Dude alone were taken today.  The ones of me and Don and me and Cynthia were from the airport the day he arrived.

*******Carol and I are so pleased with Zoey!  She’s a real sweetheart and the ideal pup for us.  Zoey is full of energy and goes for a long, 2 – 3 mile walk every day and then plays at the doggie park here in San Antonio.  I get complements everywhere I go on how pretty and how well behaved she is.Thank you Sarita for this wonderful pet.

*****Clementine Rose is a real sweetie!  She’s so smart and quick to learn new commands and LOVES her favorite treats of crushed ice and fresh carrots. Clementine is such a beautiful little lady who brings me such joy!  Sarita, thanks for offering me helpful information and tips regardign diet, vitamins, and grooming and for taking the time to answer all my email questions regarding my darling Clementine!  Thank you so much for my beautiful girl!  Cindy M.

(Fritz shown above an Oso puppy) Sarita, so many of our friends and just
people are stopping to see Fritz. They all say what a beauty and wonder if we
are going to show him as they think he is just perfect. We say he is just our
pet and we searched for quite awhile before we decided Classic Miniature
Schnauzers was the best. Also, they say what a cute hair cut and wonder who did
it. I said my breeder did and they said what a great job–do it that way all the
time. I don’t know if I told you, but we have a friend whose daughter in Georgia
raises schnauzers. We really felt bad when we told him we had decided to go with
you. He said he understood.

Also Sarita we think you are a jewel and
if you ever need us as a reference, we are here for you. I meant to say this in
the earlier e-mail but as you know we are old people and are inclined to forget
unless we write a note to ourselves.
Take care — Fred and Janet

Little Jada above)  Sarita,   Thank you so much for our beautiful little puppy!  She has made a wonderful addition to our family and has certainly settled quite nicely into our routine.  Your suggestions on crate training were excellent, as little Jada loves to sleep and play in her crate.  She and her “big sis” 8 year old schnauzer have a wonderful time playing in the yard and running through the house.  Tug-o-war is one of their favorite games, although we have to step in when big sis starts running around the room with little Jada hanging on to the toy for dear life!  We really appreciate all of the love and attention you gave to our little one, as she is so beautiful, healthy and smart!  Thanks again!

****Diego – (See a video of Diego on the Gallery 2 page)

He has an amazing temperament, we love him to bits . Hope you are well. Mark M of Canada
